Porsche : masterpieces from the Régis Mathieu collection
This summer, to celebrate seventy years of Porsche sports cars, the Cité de l’Automobile is inviting you to discover the incredible Régis Mathieu collection, which for almost thirty years has brought together exceptional models from the Stuttgart brand. It will provide an opportunity for enthusiasts, and those who are less familiar with the brand, to appreciate these historical models, complemented by exceptional chandeliers and exhibited for the first time outside the Ateliers Mathieu Lustrerie. Hence, the exhibition ‘Porsche : Chefs-d’oeuvre de la collection de Régis Mathieu’ (‘Porsche: Masterpieces From the Régis Mathieu Collection’) will introduce visitors to a remarkable collector, a creator, and restorer of chandeliers, who, like the Schlumpf brothers, believes that automobiles are works of art in their own right.
A collection of Porsche models
In collaboration with Régis Mathieu, who has acquired more than twenty Porsches since the 1980s, the Cité de l’Automobile is exhibiting around ten models from the most famous sports car brand in the world. After the success of the exhibitions in the Ateliers Mathieu Lustrerie, Régis Mathieu’s Porsches are hitting the road to Mulhouse, where they will be exhibited in the first exhibition devoted to the brand, which has inspired—and continues to inspire—entire generations.
A passion for vintage cars
Since childhood, Régis Mathieu has been interested in vintage cars, and it was only when he was seventeen that he was able to buy his first car with all his savings: a Beetle. Since then, his passion for cars has grown, and Régis Mathieu continues to add models to his unique collection: ‘I’ve discovered what being a collector means: the more you’ve got, the more you want!’
Indeed, his collection is one of the finest collections of vintage Porsches in France. His collection includes a Porsche 911S designed by Ferry Porsche, a press car that featured on the covers of all the official documents associated with the launch of the car.
A specialist in lighting
Régis Mathieu has stated that he ‘needs beauty in order to live’, which also explains his other area of interest: lighting. The director of Lustrerie Mathieu since 1992, a small family business that has now become a global company, Régis Mathieu knows everything about chandeliers. He has won international recognition for his restoration of chandeliers, which include those in the Opéra Garnier, the Hall of Mirrors at the Château de Versailles, the Philadelphia Opera House, and in many private and public chateaux.
The Cité de l’Automobile will therefore present Porsche models illuminated by around fifteen chandeliers from the Régis Mathieu collection. The incredible display of vintage cars and chandeliers will make the exhibition itinerary—with its refined and aesthetic décor—readily accessible for visitors.
A collector’s unique approach
Through this exhibition and to celebrate seventy years of Porsche sports cars, the Cité de l’Automobile is offering visitors a chance to discover the history of the Porsche brand through its inspirational cars, for which Régis Mathieu is an ambassador. Unique period Porsche models, such as a 904 GTS, a Carrera-Abarth, and a Spyder, will be brought together for the first time in the Cité de l’Automobile, including two Beetles (VW).
The most emblematic Porsche models will be presented in a unique way, under the light of various famous chandeliers, from 12 July to 15 October 2018 in the Cité de l’Automobile in Mulhouse.
