General Manager

Phoenix des Lumières, Dortmund, GERMANY 

Culturespaces, an organisation that employs 400 employees and which specialises in the management of historical monuments and museums, and the creation and management of digital art centres, is seeking a candidate for the following position at its new venue, Phoenix des Lumières: General Manager (M/W/D).

Phoenix des Lumières will open its doors in January 2023 in Dortmund, in the Phoenix Halle, a former gas plant part of the famous Phoenix West blast furnace. Located in the core of Phoenix West area, five minutes away from the Phoenix See and 15 minutes away from Dortmund city centre, Phoenix des Lumières will use unique cutting-edge technology to create immersive exhibitions devoted to some of the most famous artists in the history of art. The exhibitions will be designed to complement the unique architecture of the venue, with its 13-metre-high walls and 3000-m²-surface area.

Organization and Missions

This position reports to the International Director and the CEO of Culturespaces.
• To lead and develop the activities of the site with high quality services in terms of public reception, services and management
• To be the general manager of the Phoenix des Lumières in Dortmund
• To manage, organize and promote the activities and special events of this new digital art centre, ensuring excellent customer service and quality of exhibition screenings to give visitors the best possible experience of digital exhibitions
• To develop the turnover
• To actively contribute to the development and the visibility of the Phoenix des Lumières and Culturespaces in Dortmund and in the country


Organize and ensure an exceptional guest experience following Culturespaces standards developed in the existing digital art centres:

To provide visitors with a high quality visit every day of the year:
• Ensure consistent quality of reception and service, including for subcontracted activities
• Ensure the permanent and constant good functioning of all facilities, spaces and technical equipment
• Develop and maintain the organization of cultural and/or educational activities
• Ensure the correct running of shows
• Participate in the renewal of the program of short and long shows, immersive bar shows and public experiences
• Ensure the success of the events
• Ensure the safety of people, equipment, spaces and collections
• Ensure an impeccable maintenance of the interior and exterior spaces

Master the technical management of the site and the CULTURESPACES DIGITAL® system:
• Hardware
• Software
• Implementation of digital exhibitions
• Technical maintenance

Develop revenues, control costs and ensure the profitability of the site:
• Ensure the administrative and budgetary management of the sites by ensuring that operating costs are controlled in accordance with the annual budget
• Organize the regular reporting of information to the head office
• Manage the development of the different areas of the site

Develop the events business:
• Prospect potential clients and agencies
• Ensure the reception of the clients during events
• Negotiate the conditions for the organization of events
• Control the running of events so that they do not interfere with the visiting activity or damage the site

Managing commercial development:
• Implement a sustained commercial activity aimed at tourism professionals, individuals and companies
• Ensure local business intelligence for the development of the Company

Manage public relations:
• Represent the site, develop and maintain good relations with the owner and cultural, political and tourist partners, as well as the regional press

Manage and supervise teams:
• Supervise all the site's services so that they each carry out the expected mission
• Organize the meetings necessary for the proper functioning of the site
• Recruit employees
• Conduct individual annual interviews
• Manage the team's schedules and holidays

Requirements and qualifications

• Exceptional organizational skills
• Must have strong leadership skills
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with strong customer/client focus essential
• Ability to multi-task and respond to multiple needs simultaneously
• 10 years of experience as an operational manager of a site if possible in the luxury, cultural or touristic sector
• Must be able to work morning and evening events
• A strong affinity for culture would allow you to better understand your mission and develop a local network
• A solid knowledge of the actors, issues and networks of local and international cultural and educational sites
• Fluent in German and in English 
• Human resources management, computer literacy, budget management, financial and administrative management
