Visit of Waterloo

Visit of Waterloo

For the first time since 1815, Culturespaces offers visitors a new view of the Battle of Waterloo with the “Battlefield Tour”.
On board a specially adapted vehicle, the visitor covers the site of the battlefield. Commentaries are provided in several languages.
This dynamic discovery tour lasting 45 to 50 minutes is vital to the understanding of this major event in European history.

A New View of the Battlefield

With the “Battlefield Tour”, travelling along the tracks, visitors discover the positions of the English batteries, the sites of the French cavalry charges, the strategic points of the battle, i.e. Hougoumont Farm or Mont Saint-Jean Farm, the sites of combat between the French army and Blücher’s army, etc.

This tour provides a new view of the Battlefield : the image of the “gloomy plain”, visible from the top of Lion Mound, changes completely when the visitor discovers the undulating landscape, hollow roads, slope lines and crests on which Wellington’s army established its positions.

Wellington’s Wise Strategy Explained

By taking visitors across the Battlefield, the “Battlefield Tour” enables them to gain a better understanding of the reasons for the French defeat.
By discovering the positions of the armies on the ground, the visitor can understand Wellington’s tactical intelligence as he had positioned his troops on the crests of the hill, forcing the French to attack whilst ascending exposed slopes.

Captivating Commentaries

The commentaries provided during this visit are given by official Battlefield guides.
Both historical and anecdotal, these vivid and enthusiastic commentaries bring the battle back to life with the confrontations between the 350,000 soldiers who were there on 18 June 1815.
