A huge restoration programme undertaken by the Walloon Region was launched in May 2004 and will be completed in 2008. These transformations will be carried out with all due respect for the site and without disrupting tourist visits.
The "Grand Waterloo 1815 Memorial" is scheduled for 2008. The project includes the construction of a great "memory wall", and a vast underground Memorial which will take on the functions of the Visitors’ Centre, with new areas for permanent and temporary exhibitions, a large auditorium, educational games… etc., using modern, appealing scenographic techniques to present the Battle of Waterloo in all its splendour, the sequence of events, its causes and consequences.
The Lion Mound Hamlet will be completely restructured. The road will run around the site so that it may be pedestrianised and impose peace and respect. The current Visitors’ Centre, along with the Wellington Café, will be knocked down to clear the Lion Mound and open up a new, unobstructed view of the Battlefield.
