At the Lion Mound Hamlet, history comes to life every weekend in July and August in the outer enclosure of the Visitors’ Centre. Events and reconstructions in period dress revive the lives of the Napoleonic armies in a spectacular, authentic way. These educational events are intended for all members of the public, to make history more accessible, concrete and more alivee.
Firing the cannon
Artillerymen evolve as they did under the Empire: they carry out and comment upon the different manoeuvres of unlimbering the cannons, from loading to swabbing (cleaning the tube after firing).
Infantry parades
Some twenty or so soldiers in uniform give demonstrations of firing rifles. They load their weapons, fire and reload. They also share their knowledge of daily life in camp, soldiers’ equipment, their uniforms, etc…
Cavalry exercices
When it comes to the cavalry, movement is all. Close to 10 cavalrymen are there. They parade and go into their formation which precedes the charge at a gallop, sabres drawn! The horses’ hooves make the earth tremble and throw the spectators two hundred years back in time, to the very heart of the action.
Every year, on the site of the Battle of Waterloo, 18th June is a time for bringing together those participating in reconstructions and enthusiasts in period costume: reconstructing a bivouac, troop movements …
