The Lion Mound

Napoleon's Battle of Waterloo

Napoleon's Battle of Waterloo

Napoleon's Battle of Waterloo

An artificial tumulus made from 290,485 m3 of earth, the Lion Mound was built between 1823 and 1826 at the spot where it is believed the Prince of Orange, Grand Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands (1772-1843), was wounded on 18th June 1815.

From the top of the hillock, discover the entire battlefield, which has remained intact to this day.

Gaze at the vast theatre on whose stage Napoleon’s last battle was acted out.

A cast-iron Lion is perched at the top of the 226 steps up the hill, a 40-metre-high symbol of victory. It "announces the peace that Europe won in the fields of Waterloo”.
